How to Install Microsoft Edge Browser on Ubuntu 20.04

On this article we will learn how to install Microsoft Edge Browser on Ubuntu 20.04.


Microsoft Edge browser is based on Chromium, the open-source browser engine developed by Google. Any website, web app, or web service that works in any Chromium-based browser, such as Google Chrome. Microsoft Edge is a cross-platform web browser created and developed by Microsoft. It was first released for Windows 10 and Xbox One in 2015, for Android and iOS in 2017 and for macOS in 2019 and for Linux in 2020. On this article we will learn how to install Microsoft Edge on Ubuntu 20.04.

Microsoft Edge Installation

There are two options for installing Microsoft Edge Browser on Linux, namely: via Graphical/GUI and Terminal/CLI (using command line from console). In this article we will discuss the installation in both ways.

Installing Microsoft Edge via GUI

Microsoft Edge browser installation will be started by downloading the *.deb source file from the official Microsoft webpage, extracting it and install the application. Here are the detailed steps.

1. Locate to the Microsoft Edge Download Page

We will go to the Microsoft Edge download page which are located on http://microsoft.com/en-us/edge. Just googling to make sure the URL, then select and download Edge for Linux distribution.

2. Accept Microsoft Edge license terms

Installing Microsoft Edge will add the Microsoft repository to our system, this condition will be automatically keep Microsoft Edge up to date.

Then we will be prompted to start the download. Save the file to the default directory (/home/download/).

3. Double click on the installer for starting the installation

By clicking ‘Install’ button we will install Microsoft Edge.

4. Open Microsoft Edge

For some people, using the command line to install an application in a Linux environment is preferable to using a GUI. In this section, we will show you how to install Edge using the command line.

1. install Microsoft Edge Dependencies Packages

We will install the dependencies package by running the following command :

$ sudo apt install wget software-properties-common apt-transport-https

2. Add Microsoft GPG key to authenticate Microsoft Edge

Then we will add Microsoft GPG Key

$ curl https://packages.microsoft.com/keys/microsoft.asc | gpg --dearmor > microsoft.gpg

3. Adding Microsoft Edge Repository

Adding Microsoft Edge repository to the system, by typing command line :

$ sudo sh -c 'echo "deb [arch=amd64] https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/edge stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/microsoft-edge-dev.list'

4. Update System

By updating our Ubuntu system, it will refresh the local list of available packages software to the newer stable version. To update Ubuntu 20.04 LTS repositories, we will use the command line.

$ sudo apt update

5. Install Microsoft Edge

We will install the latest stbale of Microsoft Edge, by typing command line :

$ sudo apt install microsoft-edge-stable

The output will be as follow :

Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.

6. Launch Microsoft Edge

By using Ubuntu Software launcher, we will start the Edge Browser.
