How To Install Java (OpenJDK 11) on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

On this article we will discuss how to install  Open JDK 11 on Linux Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, where the Oracle Java installation has been covered on the other article in this web.


Almost every framework,  operating system, and even devices will be having Java running on inside. Java is one of the most  programming language which has been used in multi platform environment. In the real world environment, there are two types of  Java impelementation : Open JDK and Oracle Java. OpenJDK (Open Java Development Kit) is a free and open-source implementation of the Java Platform, where the Oracle Java is almost quite the same, except Oracle Java has an additional commercial features.

OpenJDK Installation On Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

The version of OpenJDK while this article is being written is OpenJDK 11. We will be briefly discussing how to install OpenJDK on Ubuntu on severeal steps as explained below.


Before we are going to install OpenJDK on Ubuntu system, there are several prerequisite to be fulfilled, namely : account with sudo privilege, sufficient disk space, good internet connection.

OpenJDK Installation

After the prerequisite was met, then we begin to install Java by updating system first. We will use the command line below :

ramans@otodiginet:~$ sudo apt update

How to install OpenJDK 11 on Ubuntu 20.04

After the Ubuntu system has been update, then we install the Java OpenJDK.

ramans@otodiginet:~$ sudo apt install openjdk-11-jdk

Install OpenJDK 11

After waiting for a moment, the installation was completed done. Then we will verify the Java version by submitting command line beow :

ramans@otodiginet:~$ java --version

The output will be :

openjdk 11.0.7 2020-04-14
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 11.0.7+10-post-Ubuntu-3ubuntu1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0.7+10-post-Ubuntu-3ubuntu1, mixed mode, sharing)

java --versopm
