How to Install GIMP on Ubuntu 20.04

1. Install GIMP Using Flatpak

Flatpak is a package management platform that allows users to install packages in a sandboxed/development environment. On this method we have to install Flatpak first before installing GIMP. The installation will be as following steps :

  1. Installing Flatpak by submitting series command line :
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexlarsson/flatpak
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install flatpak

$ flatpak remote-add flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

3. Verifty Flatfhub repostiory

$ flatpak remotes

4. Searching GIMP on Flatfhub repository

$ flatpak search gimp

$ sudo flatpak  install flathub org.gimp.GIMP

2. Installing GIMP Using PPA

Another way to install GIMP is to use a PPA. Be aware to use this option, because there is a fake PPA crated by Otto-kesselgulasch. If we have his PPA installed on our system, we have need to purge it first. The GIMP installaton step with PPA will be consist of serveral task as described below.

  1. Purging unwanted PPA (otto-kesselgulasch)
$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp

2. Adding the latest GIMP PPA

 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/gimp

3. Update system

$ sudo apt-get update

4. Install GIMP

$ sudo apt install gimp gmic

3.Install GIMP on Ubuntu using snap

Another way to install GIMP is to use snap. make sure snap is installed on our Ubuntu system.The following is a series of GIMP installations using snap.

  1. Install snap
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install snapd

2. Install GIMP

$ sudo snap install gimp

4. Install GIMP from Ubuntu Software Center

The last option to install GIMP is to use Ubuntu’s Software Center. We just launch Ubuntu Software Center and search for GIMP application.

5. Running GIMP Program

If we successfully install GIMP, then we will be able to call by texting gimp command line from the console or through the GUI, by looking for the GIMP icon.
