Chromium is a free and open-source codebase for a web browser, principally developed and maintained by Google. Google uses the code to make its Chrome web browser, which has additional features. There is no “stable” Chromium version available for download unlike other web browsers. A stable version has to be compiled or downloaded from a third-party. On this article we will learn how to install Chromium on Ubuntu operatings system.
There are various methods to install Chromium web browser, on this article will only cover the Chromium installation in two options:
- Using Ubuntu repository
- Using snap
Installing Chromium Browser On Ubuntu 20.04
1. Install Chromium Using Ubuntu Repository
On this option we will install Chromium based on Ubuntu 20.04 repository, here are the steps:
1.1 Update Ubuntu 20.04 LTS System
By updating our system, it will refresh the local list of available packages software to the newer stable version. To update Ubuntu 20.04 system repositories, we will use the command line:
sudo apt update.

1.2 Install Chromium we browser
After updating Ubuntu system is done, then we will submit the command line to install Chromium web browser :
sudo apt install --assume-yes chromium-browser.

1.3 Verify Chromium web browser version
After the installation was completed done, then we will verify its version by submitting command line :
mpik@worker1:~$ chromium-browser --version Chromium 94.0.4606.81 snap
1.4 Running Chromium web browser
There are two options in calling Chromium web browser, namely : by calling via command line and via Ubuntu Software Center.
- Calling from command line, by typing command line via terminal :

2. Install Chromium web browser using Snap
After updating Ubuntu system, then we also run the Chromium web browser via snap, by typing command line : sudo snap install chromium.

Then we query its version to verify Chromium web browser installation by typing command line :
mpik@worker1:~$ chromium --version Chromium 94.0.4606.81 snap
